I make sparkling hard cider. I get a pleasing "POP" opening the bottle when I use 1-1/2-cups of priming sugar in a 5-gallon batch. I also use champagne bottles with the wire baskets. On rare occasions, I don't get much fizz, but most of the time, it works pretty well. I've never had a bottle explode, either.
