WebJan 6, 2024 · One of eleven state-recognized tribes in Virginia, the Nottoway people first appear in the written record in 1650, when merchant and colonist Edward Bland encountered two Nottoway towns on the Nottoway River. WebThe Nottoway name for themselves was Cheroenhaka ('People at the Fork of the Stream', sometimes shown in colonial records as Cherohakah). They were known to the neighbouring Algonquian tribes as the Mangoac (Mengwe - although this version has also been used to describe elements of the Susquehannock) and Nadowa.
